Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease, stroke and blindness, and those are only a few of the most common complications. Every ten seconds, someone dies of diabetes-related illness — three million a year, more than breast cancer and HIV/AIDS combined.

Type 1 diabetes, the more severe form of the disease, can happen at any age. Type 2, the most common form, usually occurs in people who are over 45. It is, however, appearing earlier and earlier.
